Junior Program

General Information

Bloomfield Tennis & Fitness offers a wide range of tennis instruction for all juniors from beginners to nationally ranked USTA tournament players.  Our Junior Program provides elite instructional programming in a fun-filled environment, grounded in the fundamental principles of etiquette, integrity and sportsmanship.  While offering a top-quality learning experience for newcomers of any age and skill level, BT’s Junior Program is designed to consistently, comprehensively and continuously develop young beginners and enable them to achieve their full potential as high school tournament players.  Please be aware your child will be expected to have the appropriate skill level regardless of their age.

Registration  

You must be a Bloomfield Tennis & Fitness Member to participate in any Junior Program class.  Class availability is on a first-come, first-serve basis.  

Registration for all Junior Program Classes is available exclusively online.  

Classes will be charged on a per-class basis upon participant check-in.  

All Junior Program Participants MUST have a valid credit card on file OR funds preloaded on account as a credit, so classes can be charged upon arrival.  

Discounts:

   - Multi-Child: 10% per child per class

   - Multi-Day: 10% off per class if more than one class attended per week

   - Multi-Child-Multi-Day: 15% per child per class

Check-In

ALL individuals entering the BT facility are required to comply with current protocols and procedures.  These protocols will be STRICTLY enforced for the health and safety of all customers and staff.  For details or questions regarding BT's current protocols and procedures, please contact the Front Desk at (248) 332-9221.  

All Junior Program participants MUST check in at the Front Desk for every class BEFORE entering the courts.

Please be advised:  

- In an effort to minimize the number of people inside the building, particularly during high-traffic times such as during Junior Program classes, JUNIOR PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS ONLY will be allowed to enter the facility.  

- Access for all parents/guardians/other spectators will be STRICTLY limited to drop-off/pick OUTSIDE the BT main entrance. 

- ONE (1) parent or guardian (per family) may accompany participants 10 years of age or younger only and may stay for the duration of the class.

 

Payment

All Junior Program classes will be charged on a per-class basis.  All Junior accounts MUST have a credit card on file OR payments made to the account as a credit sufficient to cover all class costs.   The card or account will be charged for the day's class upon check-in.  Participants may cancel any scheduled class at any time.  


Cancellation & Make-up 

Due to limited capacity for the Spring Session, if a program participant does not attend any scheduled class and fails to cancel prior to class start, the account will be charged for the class.

Make-ups will not be available for the Spring Session.

 

Junior Walk-On

Due to increased court demand, free walk-on courts are temporarily unavailable.  Junior Members who are enrolled in program classes for the Spring Session will be given the discounted School Rate of $15/hour for court rental (standard court rental rate is $32/hour).  Unlike free walk-on court rentals, School Rate courts may be booked ahead of time (up to 7 days in advance).

Bloomfield Tennis & Fitness offers 3 Junior Program Sessions throughout the year.  Please note schedule changes for Holiday breaks listed below.

                                               No classes March 29, 2021 to April 1, 2021 (Spring Break)

                                               Classes resume Monday, April 5, 2021

Classes

Our Five-Level Junior Program is designed to place athletes in the appropriate class level solely on the basis of their ability.  Each level has set criteria for advancement and students must demonstrate the required skills before continuing at the next level.  Students are encouraged to pick up a level-criteria checklist from the staff and to practice these skills outside of class as well. 

Level 1

The Level 1 class for beginners uses a 36-foot court, and works on the basic motor fundamentals of tennis such as balance and movement.  Emphasized are proper handling of a racket, building rallies through throwing and catching, counting tasks, learning to keep score and tapping the ball.  Level 1 is offered as a 1 hour class.

 

Monday & Wednesday        4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

                                                        5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Level 2

Continuing on the 36-foot court, the Level 2 class teaches each basic stroke with a simple grip.  Players focus on building rallies and understanding tennis concepts (e.g. balls in or out).  Level 2 is offered as a 1 hour class.

                                                        5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Level 3

Introducing the 78-foot court, concentration in Level 3 is centered on finishing the swing, learning longer strokes, coordinating swings in all forms, directing the ball, keeping score and understanding the rules of the game.  Spin and volleys are also introduced.  Students begin to learn tennis etiquette as well as the importance of integrity and sportsmanship to the game.  Level 3 is offered as a 2 hour class.

Level 4  

The Level 4 class emphasizes competitive skills such as developing full swings combined with the use of spin, coordinating movement of both arms during the serve, changing direction and depth on strokes and moving effectively at different speeds.  Level 4 is offered as a 2 hour class.

Level 5 

The Level 5 class addresses the refinement of skill both mental and physical including:  adopting different stances and strokes based on varying shot types, changing spins and speeds, spin on the serve, improving movement through off-court training and developing tactical game plans.  Level 5 is offered as a 2 hour class.

Tournament Select

This program is for players with considerable USTA and high school tournament experience.  Players must have either a district ranking or the approval of Tennis Director Chris Shaya for entrance to this group.  This intensive program highlights competitive drills, stroke production, tactics, strategy, on-court conditioning targeting speed, agility and quickness, and match play.

Tuesday & Thursday        4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

BT Elite

This special invite-only class is dedicated to helping accomplished Midwestern tournament players realize their full potential both on and off the court.  We don’t just produce players who can hit, we produce athletes who can play.  We have assembled and trained the finest staff in the area to provide Elite students with the most comprehensive training program available.  BT Elite classes are under the direction of Tennis Director Chris Shaya and Junior Director Paco Trinidad.  Students must have a Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) of at least 7.5 or higher to be considered for this class.
